This one started with a pencil drawing on 18"x24" Canson 1557 drawing paper. I wasn't real happy with the drawing, so it seemed worth victimizing first :)
I first glued the paper using Golden soft gel medium to a similar sized cradled & gessoed birch panel, and then experimented using Golden high flow acrylics, in some places using their airbrush medium as a sort of resist. The effects of that are pretty interesting and (I think) exploring more.

One of the more intriguing articles I read recently pertains to AI generated art. The whole article is here on artnet.com; the tl;dr version boils down to the (apparent) fact that computer generated art comes across to many as more human than human generated art. At least the stuff one finds in Big Art expositions, like Art Basel, and AbEx.

<span style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: "neue helvetica w01" , "helvetica neue" , "helvetica" , "arial" , sans-serif; font-size: 14px; letter-spacing: 1px;">Where things get interesting, however, is when respondents were asked to rate how intentional, visually structured, communicative, and inspiring the images were. They “rated the images generated by [the computer] higher than those created by real artists, whether in the Abstract Expressionism set or in the Art Basel set.”

I don't want to get into the pro's and con's of the work; after all, it basically is just a study of commercially driven art versus AI generated art as interpreted by Mechanical Turk users. Hardly a recipe for scientifically sound generalizations. But I think it does provide an interesting counterpoint to an aspect of art that very few people talk about these days.

That aspect is resonance. What do I mean by this? For a full development, I suggest one dash out and get Jan Zwicky's book, Lyric Philosophy [Amazon.com] and read it. I know that's how many of the formal ideas crossed my path, after Hanna GZ recommended to me several years ago. It's a relatively novel presentation, but the ideas have permeated thought for a very long time. For example, look at Nietzche's The Gay Science, Section 373, which I added to this site a few years ago.

Most are familiar with physical examples of resonance. If you have two similarly tuned violins, and pluck a string on one, the same string on the other will vibrate. When you push a person on swing in time with its natural oscillation, and the swing goes higher. Or for a little fun, jump in the bath, start sliding back and forth in a rhythm that makes the water eventually slosh out of the tub. Kind of like the Bay of Fundy, with you as the gravitational drivers.

So what is resonance in art? It occurs, or rather can occur, on many different levels. Start with everyday experience. Go to a beach or a hill or a park, where you can just let the quotidien world fall away. Or sit quietly with bit of music, or poetry, or a painting. It can take a little practice, but with a little luck you find yourself feeling more present, more attuned, more aware. And with a little more luck, imagination - timidly at first - begins to leave its cage. Rilke's panther can go free, if we choose.

Imagination is the set of mental metaphors we create in response to the resonance between aspects of our inner and outer worlds, between our unconscious and conscious minds. The physical expression of those metaphors is what becomes art.
She's been doing a marvelous job getting photos up to date for work done over the last year. This in turn lets me produce much better prints, as well as much better pictures for posting. And it gives me much more time for drawing and painting.
Here's a few, all of which Ruth modeled for:
We are slowly catching up on photographing work - it's kind of hard to focus on that when the weather is so spectacular (it's not snowing!), and I would much rather be drawing or painting - but I guess it has to be done.
Not that I haven't been busy, though probably a little too distracted by reading. Want some suggestions? I've got lots, from Schopenhauer to my most recent find, The Singing Neanderthals.
Or Arts and Letters Daily (how much time do I waste there?!). Or (especially) b.o.a.t scribbles, thank goodness Avalon Moore only does one page a week, or I'd never get anything done....

Anyway, I've been working with The Artist Known as Ruth for on a prett5y regular basis since last fall. She's a good figurative artist in her own right, which means she brings a lot of artistic experience and background to modeling. I'm going to start putting up more work as I get caught up with the more boring aspects of studio practice - there's a rather large pile of drawings collected over the last while, ready to be edited and either tossed or photographed, as well as a couple of paintings. So I hope to get these up as soon as I can.

But in the meantime, some from last week. All are Conte on either Canson Mi-Teintes, or Fabriano Pastel paper; 50x65cm.

Ruth is very good at rather difficult poses:
Ruth generally creates the poses, but in this case I need something along these lines for a painting I am putting together, but I should have left this one to her better judgement. I had asked her to have both arms up, but the raised left arm proved a little hard after awhile, so Ruth placed it lower. And I think it works better.
I don't know if it's finished; maybe there's something in me that doesn't want to finish it? Anita and I worked together a lot during the last two years, and it was always a delight. But now she's headed out to greener pastures (I need a better metaphor, where she's headed is our frozen north) in pursuit of her professional career...But I'll leave it as is for now,

It's 24"x48", acrylic on canvas.

Bayesian Anita, Acrylic on Canvas, 40"x60"

OK, I changed the name again. I'm nothing if not flexible :).

Anyway, I had procrastinated over the statement for the work, but finally (after a lot of grief), here it is:

114. (Tractatus
Logico-Philisophicus, 4.5): “The general form of propositions is: this is how
things are.” – That is the kind of proposition that one repeats to oneself
countless times. One thinks that one is tracing the outline of the thing’s
nature over and over again, and one is merely tracing round the frame through
which we look at it. (Ludwig Wittgenstein, Philosophical Investigations)

[Bayesian inference
is a formalization of how we draw from subjective, uncertain, fragmented
experience towards a more objective but never completed whole.]

Art is a proposition, both about and to the world; the rest of the Wittgenstein quote is pretty much in tune with what happens when one draws so much from another.

The painting is currently at the Dart Gallery , though not yet on display. But you should pay them a visit anyway, they are just finishing up a great show of street art, and will be hanging a new one soon on dance.
Update.

I originally called this Anitium, but I think Anita of Bayes is a better fit. So that stays for now. Maybe I'll write something up later on why - re. Bayesian theories of perception - but I'm off to dinner and a bit of Game of Thrones.

The painting is 24"x36", acrylic on birch panel.

The title of this work is drawn from two disparate sources: George Gamow’s popular science book, “1,2,3,...,Infinity” (1961), which influenced me greatly as a youngster; and an anecdote recently related to me by an old friend. Apparently he was trying to explain some abstract point of Vedic philosophy to his partner, who responded, “Dennis, I am just a simple man: 1,2,3,...”. That simple act of counting which (for me) captures the sense of order that we try and place on a chaotic universe – where does it lead? What does it mean?

The painting itself is based on two of the (several hundred) gesture/figure drawings done in collaboration with Anita over the last year. As Degas pointed out over a hundred years ago, people are made for looking at one another. Yet in our post-modern era direct “slow” interaction is being replaced by a near-instantaneous technologically mediated experience of one another. But without the patient attention and attunement to one another, we lose the nuances that give life its depth.

The simple acts of modeling and drawing that take place on either side of the easel are one way, I think, to slow down and accept, explore, and express what life is all about. One hopes that some understanding comes along as well.HalifaxCBhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02443891200099565167noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6868179964397182237.post-4373129025858422322014-06-20T17:14:00.000-03:002014-07-07T23:25:02.209-03:00Art and AbuseEvery now and then some real asshole "guy-with-a-camera" makes the news, wannabe Roman Polanskis I suppose. Anyway, the latest is a celebrity photographer down in New York, Terry Richardson. There's a write-up of him at the New York Times, and I hope anyone considering modeling- especially for the self-described portfolio photographers one finds in the digital media - read it carefully, and for two specific reasons.

The first reason to read it is to become familiar with the sort of abuse that one can encounter in a studio without proper safeguards; the other is the extent to which the art establishment will go to protect the abuser and blame the abused. If you are a model and are reading this I hope it brings home the fact that if you encounter these kinds of situations, you may well be left to hang and dry on your own.

Certainly the primary defence against this sort of abuse is to know your rights and enforce them. But that's very easy to say, but hard to put into practice, particularly as predators by nature tend to be very good at figuring out who, and who is not, vulnerable, and using that to their advantage.

Another defence though is to make sure the ground rules are clear from the start, and to make sure the model has significant enough leverage to discourage Richardson's type of abuse. You do that through a proper Artist/Model agreement that guarantees the rights of models, and a much larger degree of control over images than is normally the case (as it is, models don't rate much higher in standard agreements than the can of beans in a still life).

Now I have currently an Artist/Model agreement that covers a good deal of this, but it's rather ad hoc; it was drawn up in discussions with the models I have worked with, and I am certainly no lawyer. I am currently working with a lawyer to make something more formal. If anyone reading this would like a copy of the former, or the latter when it is completed, just get in touch with me via this blog, or via email at caldwell.brobeck@gmail.com .
So I bought a bunch, and Saturday morning took them, brushes, and one 20"x30" canvas to Richard's Saturday morning life drawing session to see what would happen. The sessions tend to go along 8 three minute gestural poses followed by a single long pose of 2 1/2 hours. So everything went onto one canvas. Then I took the result home and tarted it up....
I hope Anne Marie forgives me for this :)
A few from the last two weeks (I really should get back to posting). Most of the winter I have been working with Anita in pen and ink, reading too much philosophy (more on that later), and trying to learn German. So it feels great to be getting back into working large with pastel.

My world is hardly Kafkaesque, and Anita is certainly not a Kafka protagonist, but I love the sentiment.

Two from this Sunday with Anita:
But first a little something (12"x18", pastel on Rives) I had been working on from figure sketches done before she left:

There's still more to do before I take it to anything larger.

(more below the fold)

Anita as usual was quite on her game but alas I was not; I haven't done any life drawing for a couple of weeks (and had enjoyed the night before a little too much perhaps) so it took awhile to get rolling. But these two (50x65 mm, conte on pastel paper) came out OK I think...

Now that I am in between models, it's time to clean up some of the work I did with Ruth this summer. These were quite fun to do; we'd set the timer for ten minutes, Ruth would take some (usually difficult) pose, I would find an interesting angle, and then draw from there until either the timer went off, or (more likely) one of us broke.

Alas, I've been left Ruthless as of last Friday. And since I've been tied up with a bunch of boring stuff since then, and since I have a pile of more finished stuff to work on, I thought I would spend a bit of time doing a little capriccio to remind myself what delightful summer it was working with Ruth.

This is based on several quick charcoal drawings I did of Ruth towards the end of the summer. It's smallish (10"x30", approximately), pastel and conte on Rives BFK.
Wednesday was a delightful day here in Halifax - proper summer weather! And to top it off, Ruth was wearing a delightful orange sundress (is that what they're called? My fashion sense is abysmal). My only regret is that I chose to start off in charcoal. Well maybe there's another, my drawing was quite stiff to start off with. Anyway, I love the ways these things hang on her.

And as usual she struck some graceful poses.

As well as some difficult ones - some hard for me:

And some much harder for her. This one I'd really like to turn into a painting...

But first I have to finish this one. In particular I want to bring out what Ruth is doing with her feet, what with her left tucked over her right thigh and into the back of her right ankle...
